Palazzo della Cancelleria

Palazzo della Cancelleria

This imposing sixteenth-century Renaissance building stands in the historic center of Monte San Savino and since 1992 has housed the Historical Archive of the Municipality of Monte San Savino (more than 4,000 ancient documents), as well as the offices of the local Pro Loco association and the Historic Districts.

The Community Chancellery was moved here in 1761 from the Palazzo Pretorio: here the community archives were preserved, the general council met, and the chancellor resided. After its suppression (1865), the building became home to public offices and schools.

The palace was probably a residence of the Di Monte family, as evidenced by the family coat of arms carved on the façade. The elegant front, marked by two rows of architraved windows and a rusticated portal, also preserves a niche with a Madonna and Child and curious details such as the plaque of the Knights of Saint Stephen and the inscription Per non dormire (“So as not to sleep”) on the side architrave, the motto of the Baldi family.
