The Guglia

The Guglia

In the heart of Monte San Savino rises the Guglia in Piazza Gamurrini, an elegant obelisk in pietra serena topped by a sphere and the Florentine lily, symbol of the Medici family.

It was erected in 1644 in honor of Mattias de’ Medici, brother of Grand Duke Ferdinando II, when he was granted the fief of Monte San Savino. Designed by architect Don Vitale Perini, the obelisk was executed by Lucignano stonemasons Antio and Ippolito Bracciali.

The pedestal once bore coats of arms and celebratory inscriptions, now lost, paying tribute to the “warrior prince” of Tuscany.
