Former Synagogue

At numbers 13–14 Via Salomon Fiorentino stands the building of the former synagogue, a testament to the vibrant Jewish community active in Monte San Savino from 1627 to 1799, when the Jewish population was forced to flee during the religious uprisings known as Viva Maria.

Its origins date back to an 18th-century renovation (1729–1732), followed by numerous later interventions, especially in the 19th century. After the departure of the community, the building passed through various owners until it was acquired by the municipality in 1924.

The synagogue occupied the top floor of a two-building complex that also housed the school and probably the rabbi’s residence. Several architectural elements of great interest are still recognizable today:

  • the rusticated portal and rectangular windows at number 13;
  • the niche of the Aron ha-Kodesh, the sacred cabinet for the Tablets of the Law;
  • remains of terracotta piping, possibly connected to the ancient ritual bath (miqveh).

Local tradition also recalls a curious detail: the so-called Rabbi’s Throne, a stone seat still located in an adjacent house.
