Piazza Gamurrini

Piazza Gamurrini

The original nucleus of the ancient settlement—once known as Area Alta or Ajalta—Piazza Gamurrini remains the city’s main square. It is dominated by the ancient fortress of the Cassero and flanked by significant civic buildings such as Palazzo della Cancelleria and Palazzo Galletti. Completing the square’s decoration is the 17th-century Guglia, erected in honor of Mattias de’ Medici, lord of Monte San Savino from 1644.

Formerly called Piazza Jalta in reference to its origins, the square is now named after Gian Francesco Gamurrini, a distinguished historian and archaeologist from Arezzo who was Savinese by adoption and lived in Palazzo Galletti.
