Piazza di Monte

Piazza di Monte

Also known as the “authors’ square,” Piazza di Monte owes its present appearance to a reorganization carried out around 1515 by Andrea Sansovino. While restoring his family home overlooking the square, Sansovino also addressed structural issues by creating the gently sloping sdrucciolo that connects the square to Via Sansovino below.

Completing the harmony of the space are the octagonal cistern and the public fountain topped by a Marzocco, a 17th-century copy of the original 16th-century sculpture by Sansovino. The original, severely damaged in 1675, was walled into the surviving section above the outer arch of Porta Senese, also known as Porticciolo Guglielmi.
