Prisons of Palazzo di Monte
These evocative public prisons were built in the early nineteenth century, when not only the municipal offices but also the local magistrate’s court were transferred to Palazzo di Monte.
They replaced the ancient and now outdated fourteenth-century prisons located in the Civic Tower and were created in the mezzanine level already existing between the ground floor and the noble floor of the palace.
The rooms, accessed via a steep staircase from the inner courtyard of the palace, are well preserved and contain six cells (each equipped with a wooden bench used as a bed and double solid wooden doors) as well as the original communal toilet.
