Prisons of Palazzo di Monte

Prisons of Palazzo di Monte

These evocative public prisons were built in the early nineteenth century, when not only the municipal offices but also the local magistrate’s court were transferred to Palazzo di Monte.

They replaced the ancient and now outdated fourteenth-century prisons located in the Civic Tower and were created in the mezzanine level already existing between the ground floor and the noble floor of the palace.

The rooms, accessed via a steep staircase from the inner courtyard of the palace, are well preserved and contain six cells (each equipped with a wooden bench used as a bed and double solid wooden doors) as well as the original communal toilet.

This atmospheric site can be visited free of charge all year round.

Hanging Gardens

Hanging Gardens

Built as the rear completion of Palazzo di Monte, this harmonious garden represents the distinctive feature of the building, which thus serves both as a town residence dedicated to negotium (that is, business and official public duties) and as a villa of otium (that is, rest and leisure) for the commissioning family.

From the first level, a short staircase leads to the second, characterized by orderly geometric flowerbeds following the model of the “Italian-style garden.” On the left, it is possible to admire the right side of the Church of the Suffrage, with the remains of the “little choir” from which prisoners of the nearby jail could attend Mass without leaving detention. In the center of the back wall, within a niche, there is a bust depicting Andrea Sansovino, created in 1989 by the sculptor Franco Zazzeri. Through two small gates, visitors can access the garden of Palazzo Galletti, which hosts the open-air venue “Giulio Vignoli” Theatre (access permitted only during events held there).

This airy and well-preserved garden, with its dual exposure overlooking both the historic center and the surrounding hills, provides an ideal setting for public events and weddings and is open to visitors all year round.
