Gargonza

Gargonza

About seven kilometers from the historic center, this ancient medieval village is perfectly preserved with walls, a crenellated tower and the ancient Church of Saints Tiburzio and Susanna, and nestled among the Tuscan hills, olive groves and woods.

Already a domain of the Ubertini, in 1285 it was conquered by Arezzo allied with the Ghibellines.

In 1304 it hosted Dante Alighieri, who met here immediately after his exile from Florence with the other escaped White Guelphs and the Aretini.

In 1307 it was besieged by the Florentines, who however abandoned it feeling threatened by the Aretini.

In 1381 the castle was sold by the Ubertini to Siena, and then returned to the Florentines in 1395.

After various vicissitudes, in 1774 Gargonza entered definitively the community of Monte San Savino.

Definitively depopulated during the first half of the ‘900, it was then recovered by the family Guicciardini Corsi Salviati who has provided for the conservative restoration transforming it into a period residence of great charm..
