Giulio Salvadori
An Italian poet, literary critic, and educator, Giulio Salvadori was born in Monte San Savino on September 14, 1862. After a youth marked by intense cultural engagement, he returned to Catholicism in 1885, beginning a path of profound spiritual conversion. He became a professor of literature and, in 1923, was appointed to the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan, where he also served as dean of the Faculty of Letters.
Author of works such as Il Canzoniere civile and Ricordi dell’Umile Italia, Salvadori was also involved in the revision of the Italian Catechism at the request of Pope Pius X. He died in Rome on October 7, 1928, and was buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria in Aracoeli. Declared a “Servant of God,” his cause for beatification is currently underway.
His legacy is celebrated annually in Monte San Savino with the Giornata Salvadoriana, an event dedicated to his poetry and spirituality, and with a poetry competition founded in 1984 for students from primary to secondary schools.
