Ferdinando Zannetti

Ferdinando Zannetti

Born in Monte San Savino, Ferdinando Zannetti (1801–1881) was a physician, patriot, and intellectual figure of the Italian Risorgimento. A professor of anatomy and surgery at various universities and institutions, he took part in the Wars of Independence and in 1862 famously treated Giuseppe Garibaldi, saving his leg from amputation.
A deputy of the short-lived Tuscan Republic in 1849, he later became a senator of the Kingdom of Italy and a committed public servant, remembered for his contributions to both medicine and the nation. He died in Florence in 1881.
